Overview
This is a guide to help you through the process of setting up a Shopify store on Ochre.
Because Ochre does not provide direct customer support for Shopify orders, please ensure you have read and understood all of these points before you embark on selling goods via Shopify (or other third-party retail channels) via Ochre. You will need to monitor the emails you receive from Shopify and Ochre to stay informed of any service updates and changes.
We have published detailed guides on how to perform Shopify order management actions via Ochre, but if you have any questions beyond this, please email Ochre Operations (operations@ochre-platform.com) for assistance.
While we are handling your query, please don’t send us any customer data, just send links (not screengrabs or IDs please) to the relevant order or search query.
Set up a Shopify store on Ochre
Basic setup
The first steps involve setting up your Shopify store (if new) and setting up the store in Ochre Admin. Please note you must be using Shopify's Grow, Advanced or Plus plans to integrate with Ochre.
- If you are setting up a new Shopify store, ensure this setup takes place before continuing. Further configuration on the Shopify side will be done a bit later.
- Once set up, you can contact Ochre Operations and request them to set up a Shopify store for you, including the fulfilment account and warehouses you specify. It is important for this setup to be done before we connect to the Shopify store.
- Once they have set it up, they will notify you and you will be able to see the new store in your Ochre dashboard.
Initial Connection between Ochre and Shopify
Ochre makes use of Shopify’s concept of a ‘Custom app’ to connect each of your Shopify stores to Ochre. Each Shopify store will be connected to a single store within Ochre. Very simply, this is a connector which determines what access Ochre Platform has within your Shopify store, and requires only a small amount of configuration.
This connection allows us to:
- Establish multiple fulfilment locations in Shopify;
- Import and update Shopify catalogue into Ochre Admin;
- Ingest Shopify orders into Ochre Admin for management and fulfilment;
- Automatically mark Shopify orders as shipped; and
- Automatically update stock levels on Shopify.
Create Shopify Custom App
- In your Shopify store dashboard, navigate to the Configuration Menu by selecting the gear icon in the lower left corner. Select the Apps menu, then select ‘App and sales channel settings’ in the popup window.
- If you have not done so already, select the 'Allow legacy custom app development' button, and any prompts that follow.
- On the top of the screen, press the ‘Develop Apps’ button. Don’t worry - no development is required. If prompted to Allow custom app development, click the Allow button and continue.
- On the App development page, select the ‘Create an app’ button at the top of the screen. A popup will ask you for a name for your app - this can be whatever you like, but we recommend the following:
Ochre integration for Shopify - [Your Shop Name]
- Within the same popup, you are asked to name an App developer. This can be any of your admin team, but will default to your name.
Configure Custom App Scopes
Configuring App scopes is a fancy way of saying we need to define what this app will be able to do.
This involves selecting the access options needed by Ochre, and saving changes. The steps to configure custom app scopes:
- If you are not already in the configuration page for the app just created, navigate there by selecting it from the app list on the App development page.
- From there, select ‘Configure Admin API scopes’. This will take you to a long list of access options.
- Select the options listed in the table below by clicking the checkbox next to each:
| Section | Access scope option |
| Assigned fulfillment orders | write_assigned_fulfillment_orders |
| read_assigned_fulfillment_orders | |
| Customers | read_customers |
| Fulfillment services | write_fulfillments |
| read_fulfillments | |
| Inventory | write_inventory |
| read_inventory | |
| Locations | write_locations |
| read_locations | |
| Merchant-managed fulfillment orders | write_merchant_managed_fulfillment_orders |
| read_merchant_managed_fulfillment_orders | |
| Order Editing | write_order_edits |
| read_order_edits | |
| Orders | write_orders |
| read_orders | |
| Products | write_products |
| read_products | |
| Returns | write_returns |
| read_returns | |
| Sales Channels | read_channels |
| Third-party fulfillment orders | write_third_party_fulfillment_orders |
| read_third_party_fulfillment_orders |
- Once these options have been selected, hit 'Save' in the upper part of the page.
- Once the Custom app configuration has been set and reviewed, it is ready for activation by pressing the 'Install App' button on the App configuration page. This produces something called an API Access Token.
Important note: An API Access Token is a highly sensitive item - it provides access to whomever has it. The token must be handled with care - please do not email, text, or transmit the token unless using a means of secure transfer. If you want to store it, please store in a place that you are confident is secure.
For the above reason, the Shopify token can only be accessed once - please copy it and if you would like, store it in a safe location.
- Moving back to the Ochre dashboard, navigate to the Shopify store and select the Store settings page. Here, you will need to copy and paste your Shopify API Access token. After copying and pasting, the token will not be visible so ensure that all characters are copied accurately.
- Next, enter the store’s root domain - the URL you see on the storefront homepage including “https://”. This should not be a custom/redirected domain if one is in use. For example:
https://[yourstorename].myshopify.com
Once those have been pasted in, select ‘Save Changes’
- A success message will be displayed, and your Shopify store is now connected to Ochre.
Please note - not all these permissions are currently being used by our Integration, but setting them up now avoids the need to re-configure later.
Other useful information about our Shopify integration
Bundles
Initially, Shopify product bundles will not be supported. On the Shopify side, this feature requires an additional app (i.e. cannot be done 'out of the box'), and we need to understand more about which bundle apps may be in use by our Clients. If we decide to offer this feature, it would likely be limited to a specific bundle app.
Digital Products
Initially, Shopify digital products will not be supported. We need to understand whether Clients are interested in this feature, and if so - which apps may be in use by our Clients. If we decide to offer this feature, it would likely be limited to a specific digital products / digital fulfilment app.
Stock
After your Shopify store is set up successfully, stock from your Ochre warehouses will be connected to the products on your Shopify store.
It is very important to note that stock in each warehouse will be shared between all stores connected to that warehouse. For example, if one Shopify store and one Ochre store are connected to the same warehouse and a sale is made via Shopify, stock will decrement on both stores.
It is also important to note that stock will not decrement on Ochre until each Order is successfully ingested - otherwise we do not know which SKUs to decrement. This is why setting the additional metadata on Shopify products within Ochre is so important.
